General Information

Who: All students from Gadsden Independent School District (GISD), Hatch Valley Public Schools (HVPS), and Las Cruces Public Schools (LCPS) exiting grades 5-8 in May 2022.

What: Students may participate in up to two (2) camps during Summer 2022, including the option of two camps during the same week.

Maximum camp capacity is 15 students per camp session.

All campers, instructors, and staff are welcome to wear face coverings if they choose, even if not required by current orders and policies. Please see all our COVID-19 safety practices and policies here.

All camps will follow the current New Mexico State Public Health Order , NMPED “COVID-19 Response Toolkit for New Mexico’s Public Schools” , NMAA guidelines, and NMSU policies.

When: Camps run Monday–Friday in June 2022. Camps are offered in morning and afternoon sessions. Please see the camp descriptions below for exact dates and times.

Where: Camps will meet in-person on the NMSU Main Campus unless otherwise specified in the camp descriptions (see below). Details on drop-off and pick-up times and locations will be sent at least one (1) week before the camp starts.

Cost: All NMSU STEM Outreach Center summer camps are FREE. Our camps are funded by local and state grants that support out-of-school time programs.

Transportation: Participants must provide their own transportation to and from STEM Outreach Center camps. 

     Exceptions:

  • GISD will provide buses to and from camps for registered students the week of June 6-10, 2022.
  • HVPS will provide buses to and from camps for registered students the week of June 13-17, 2022.

Food: 

  • Snacks: Camps will provide pre-packaged snacks for campers each day. If you have special dietary needs, please let us know on the registration form and we will do our best to accommodate you.
  • Lunches: The STEM Outreach Center is partnering with the FYI Summer Food Program to provide free lunches to all campers. All lunches must be eaten on site. Please let us know on the registration form if you plan to eat lunch with us. At this time, the Summer Food Program is not able to accommodate special dietary needs. 

Registration

There is one registration form for all camps. Please indicate your first-, second-, and third-choice camps on the form. We will do our best to place campers in their first-choice camps but cannot guarantee placement.

You will receive an email confirming that we have received your registration form once it is submitted. We will send an email confirming your camp placement within two weeks of receiving your completed registration form.  

If you are not placed in your first-choice camp, you may choose to accept the placement in another camp or be placed on the waitlist for your first choice.  

Camp details and required release forms will be sent at least one (1) week before each camp begins. All campers must have NMSU’s required safety and release forms on file before the camp starts.

----- Week 1: June 6-10, 2022 (ALL SESSIONS ARE FULL)-----

GISD Students only

All camps this week are reserved for GISD students. GISD will provide buses from the Chaparral, Santa Teresa, and Anthony areas to the camps at NMSU. All campers MUST register for a full day of camp (2 camp sessions) due to the busing schedule.

Imagine it, build it, and test it! This fun, hands-on camp will show you what it takes to be an engineer by designing, building, and testing bridges. At the end of the week, we will take a field trip to the NMSU College of Engineering.

Join this camp to learn about UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems)! You will explore drones, the science of flight, and coding. And, of course, test fly drones!

Morning Session: 8:30-11:30 am || Afternoon Session: 12:30-3:30 pm (SESSIONS ARE FULL)

Do you like being creative? Are you good at problem solving? Do you like building things? Are you competitive? Join us for a week of building rockets, rubber band cars, towers, and much more while sharpening your problem solving and engineering skills. Pit your creations against other students in some friendly competition and wrap up the week with rocket launches! We hope to see you there!

Come join us for a week of fun art lessons and projects! “Summer In Color” will teach you about color theory, abstract art, self-portraits, and metal stamping! Our week will end with a trip to NMSU’s very own art museum where we will observe art work and learn how to speak about it. See you soon!

What do you like about your community? Is there anything you would change about it? In this camp, we will explore the importance of community through trust building activities, social emotional strategies, and how your voice can create change! You will work with a team of like-minded peers to design and pitch projects that are geared towards the youth in your community. 

Morning Session: 8:30-11:30 am

Rising 6th-8th graders are invited to become part of the STEM Explorers, make lifelong friends, and imagine the possibilities of a STEM career. We will meet with students and staff from various NMSU and DACC departments and learn about the STEM skills involved in exploring robotics, aviation, medicine, and more! We will also hear first-hand experiences of people of diverse backgrounds who are in various STEM fields and will engage in interactive STEM activities in NMSU and DACC labs. Come meet other middle school students and discover a world of possibilities through exploration of STEM!

Do you like sports? Do you like making videos or tik toks? Join us for this sports and digital media summer camp where you will get active and learn about video and editing technology. We will try many different physical activities while using GoPros to catch all of the action, then we will learn how to edit the videos into fun action clips and trailers.

Join this camp to develop your skills as an advanced pilot! You will learn more about the science behind flying through hands-on projects, building and flying drones, and conducting flight simulations.

Afternoon Session: 12:30-3:30 pm (SESSION IS FULL)

 

OFF CAMPUS CAMP – This camp will meet at the Monte Vista Hiking Trail Parking Lot .

Join us for an outdoor engineering and hiking camp at Tortugas (A) Mountain! Each day starts with a desert hike and will continue with a guest speaker to learn about the local desert ecosystem. We will work on electrical, mechanical, and outdoor projects that include sensor bots, plant salve, building a paper ball run, and so much more!

Greeting, Global Citizens! Do you care about the Earth and your community? Do you want to explore the ways you can make an impact through renewable and sustainable construction and energy choices? Join us as we design and build the next generation of green shelters and market our ideas to potential investors.

Greeting Agents! We’re in quite a bind this time. The world’s biggest ruby was just stolen from the Zuhl Collection at NMSU. We need your help to crack the case! As a CSI Agent, you will hone your interviewing and observation skills, investigate the evidence, and identify the culprit.

Have you heard about e-textiles? This camp will teach you how to create your own e-textile using an Arduino board and LEDs. With no previous electronic experience, students can experiment with electronics through fabric art by using conductive threads to build working circuits directly on fabrics. With no programming experience, students can learn how to program the Arduino board for various e-sewing projects. Join us as we learn about combining electronics, arts, and programming!

OFF CAMPUS CAMP – Transportation will be provided from NMSU to and from trailheads.

This camp will provide participants a chance to learn more about the outdoors and our national monument. We will explore the trails and learn about the wildlife and plant life that make our desert backyard so amazing and one of a kind. Hikes will be guided by experts and allow participants to see the Chihuahuan desert in a whole new light.

Morning Session: 7:30 am-12:00 pm (SESSION IS FULL)
