General Information

Who: All students from Gadsden Independent School District (GISD), Hatch Valley Public Schools (HVPS), and Las Cruces Public Schools (LCPS) exiting grades 4-7 by June 2023.

What: Students may participate in up to two (2) camps during Summer 2023, including the option of two camps during the same week.

Maximum camp capacity is 20 students per camp session.

Camp sessions will be reserved for either students exiting grades 4 & 5 or for students exiting grades 6 & 7. Please pay attention to the grade levels specified for each session in the descriptions below.

When: Camps run Monday–Friday in June 2023. Camps are offered in morning and afternoon sessions. Please see the camp descriptions below for exact dates and times.

Where: Camps will meet in-person on the NMSU Main Campus unless otherwise specified in the camp descriptions (see below). Details on drop-off and pick-up times and locations will be sent at least one (1) week before the camp starts.

Cost: All NMSU STEM Outreach Center summer camps are FREE. Our camps are funded by local and state grants that support out-of-school time programs.

Transportation: Participants must provide their own transportation to and from STEM Outreach Center camps. 

     Exceptions:

  • Hatch Valley Public Schools (HVPS) will provide buses to and from camps for registered students the week of June 5-9, 2023.
  • Gadsden Independent School District (GISD) will provide buses to and from camps for registered students the week of June 19-23, 2023.

Food: 

  • Snacks: Camps will provide pre-packaged snacks for campers each day. If you have special dietary needs, please let us know on the registration form and we will do our best to accommodate you.
  • Lunches: The STEM Outreach Center is partnering with the FYI Summer Food Program to provide free lunches to all campers. All lunches must be eaten on site. Please let us know on the registration form if you plan to eat lunch with us. At this time, the Summer Food Program is not able to accommodate special dietary needs. 

Registration

There is one registration form for all camps. Please indicate your preferred camps and times on the form. We will do our best to place campers in their top-choice camps but cannot guarantee placement.

You will receive an email confirming that we have received your registration form once it is submitted. We will send an email confirming your camp placement within two weeks of receiving your completed registration form.  

If you are not placed in your top-choice camp, you may choose to accept the placement in another camp or be placed on the waitlist for your preferred camp.  

Camp details and required release forms will be sent at least one (1) week before each camp begins. All campers must have NMSU’s required safety and release forms on file before the camp starts.

  Camp Descriptions

----- Week 1: June 5-9, 2023 -----

  HVPS will provide buses this week to the camps at NMSU. Campers riding the bus MUST register for a full day of camp (2 camp sessions) due to the busing schedule.

WEEK 1 Registration is CLOSED

Calling all Puzzle Masters! Put your puzzle solving skills to the test as you design and build an escape room to trap your peers and family. Learn puzzle making skills to stump even the savviest sleuth, then let your imagination free to create your own escape room. Families are invited to join us on Friday to test out the escape rooms.

Take to the skies with mini drones! Learn to fly and capture aerial photos and videos, and explore the real-world applications and possibilities of drones. Put your critical thinking to the test, as you problem-solve through a thrilling exploration of drone physics, and explore tomorrow's drone-filled future.

Do you know what a physicist does? Join us to find out as we investigate different forms of energy and use the principles of physics to solve real-world problems! We will explore how Accident Investigators, Laser Scientists, Materials Scientists, Power Plant Engineers, and Sound Engineers each use physics in their jobs.

Afternoon Session - Grades 4 & 5: 12:30-3:30 pm Session Full

 

Rising 7th-8th graders are invited to become part of the STEM Explorers, make lifelong friends, and imagine the possibilities of a STEM career. We will meet with students and staff from various NMSU and DACC departments and learn about the STEM skills involved in exploring robotics, aviation, medicine, and more! We will also hear first-hand experiences of people of diverse backgrounds who are in various STEM fields and will engage in interactive STEM activities in NMSU and DACC labs. Come meet other middle school students and discover a world of possibilities through exploration of STEM!

Morning Session - Grades 6 & 7: 8:30-11:30 am

  

This camp will be focused on learning the basics of small aircraft flight. From understanding remote control flight and performance (as an introduction), to a survival scenario of 5 days to learn to fly, your ability to take a "crash course" in how it works then apply said skills to escape the survival scenario where you are your only hope! We will train you, but do you think you have what it takes to escape?? Let's find out! Join this camp and enjoy the path of an aviator!

Do you like sports? Do you like making videos or TikToks? Join us for this sports and digital media summer camp where you will get active and learn about video and editing technology. We will try many different physical activities while using GoPros to catch all of the action, then we will learn how to edit the videos into fun action clips and trailers.

Drones are transforming the world of arts and entertainment, performing alongside artists as diverse as Metallica, Drake, and Cirque du Soleil. Follow in the footsteps of the world’s groundbreaking drone designers, weaving together the engineering design process and principles of aerodynamics as you work with a team to costume, choreograph, and code tiny aerial robots in creative performances. Use your imagination, problem-solve, and explore STEAM careers through the innovative ways drones are being used for good!

Join us to explore the fundamentals of MMA (mixed martial arts) and elements of Dance! No experience required! Learn the basics of ju-jitsu, wrestling, punching, and kicking, for self-defense and to stay in shape. Practice Hip-hop, Breakdance, and Modern dance and learn what makes each style unique. See how to build relationships with your fellow campers and instructors through dance and MMA, and leave camp with some new skills and some new friends!
