Social-Emotional Learning Resources

The heart of education is attending to the human mind, body, and spirit – this is human work! We must not separate attending to academic needs at the expense of human needs. The educational community united last spring around the idea that what was most important in the sudden transition to remote learning was attending to the social-emotional needs of their students (Raygoza, León, & Norris, 2020). Students, teachers, para-educators, administrators, support staff, caregivers, and families all had immediate social-emotional needs that resulted from the closing of traditional school buildings. Emotional support deals with the human aspects of understanding and managing change by setting realistic positive goals, developing empathy for others, establishing and maintaining positive relationships, practicing flexible instruction, informed decision-making and advocacy.
